Why Should I replace My Strut Bushings and Bearings?
The front suspension on your Audi or VW uses the combination of a strut bushing and a strut bearing in it's design (called a strut mount when combined). This design is used because the strut, as an integral part of the front suspension assembly, must be able to turn freely as you turn the wheel left to right. The strut bearing is what allows this to happen. Due to their location and job, your strut bushings and bearings take a beating on every bump, dip and pot-hole that you hit. Over time the bearings can become damaged and will start to bind. This can cause them to pop and make noise, as well as allow for play at the top of the strut. In addition, the rubber bushing will gradually become more compressed and will eventually no longer properly cushion the assembly in the strut tower. When this starts to happen, you will experience a rougher ride, poor handling and increased tire wear due to a constantly changing alignment.
You can maintain the performance of your suspension by properly replacing the front upper strut bushings and bearings whenever you perform a major front suspension service such as replacing your struts or installing new springs. Even if you do not need to replace other major suspension components, we highly recommend replacing your strut bushings and bearings at least every 80-100k miles.
Factory, Audi TT/TTS/TTRS or 034Motorsport Strut Bushings
Factory strut bushings are on the softer side while 034Motorsport strut bushings tend to be stiffer. While the 034Motorsport strut bushings don't typically cause a huge increase in noise or vibrations, some road imperfections will be noticed more. In between the factory bushings and the 034Motorsport bushings are the 8J TT bushings. These were designed by Audi to deliver firmer, faster responding handling vs the normal factory bushings.
