The cold start valve is yet another fuel system item that is overlooked. Not only is it required to be in good working order for cold starts (it sprays fuel at start since the airflow plate is stationary and the injectors would be 100% closed) it also kicks in at wide open throttle, ensuring a proper mixture.

The CIS fuel system is a great set up for naturally aspirated motors, and when everything is up to spec, it is dead reliable and excellent for performance. The problem is when vacuum leaks and faulty fueling parts are not replaced, the system will quickly have problems, leading to hard starts, inconsistent performance and unreliable running. Keep your early car original, and reliable, with quality new fuel parts.
